William Arthur White moved from Oxfordshire sometime in the early 1860s to seek his fortune in London. It seems he met Betsey Fulljames through his brother, George, who was working at the Abbey Arms, Abbey Wood, in 1861, where Betsey lived with her stepfather. He set up home in West Ham where he worked at Abbey Mills Pumping Station as a beam engine oiler. When Betsey died he married Ann Wixon, who was 35 years his junior. Written records indicate she was his niece, in which case the marriage was illegal.
